Castable resin vs. hand-carved wax: what jewelers should know

Every jeweler who calls us asks a version of the same question: will a printed pattern burn out as clean as my wax? The honest answer is yes — if the pattern was printed for casting, not just printed and handed over.

Where printed patterns win

Repeatability and detail. A filigree pattern, pavé seats, or a signet with micro-lettering prints identically every time at 25 microns. Need six of the same shank for a production run? They're clones. A ring that took a bench day to carve is a two-hour print, and the file is forever — resize it, mirror it, tweak the gallery, print again.

What a clean burnout actually requires

Castable wax resin isn't wax — it's a photopolymer loaded with wax that needs a slower, staged burnout. We print patterns hollow where the geometry allows, with drain holes placed off the finish surfaces, and we'll tell you the ramp schedule that works with this specific resin. Ash content is comparable to carving wax when the schedule is followed; when it isn't, you get the porosity horror stories you've heard.

Where carving still wins

One-off organic work where you're finding the form as you go — a carver's fingers are still faster than CAD for that. And patterns over the Form 4's build volume obviously don't print in one piece. We'd rather tell you to keep carving than sell you a print that fights your process.
